What to Keep from Your Baby's First Days
In the first days after birth, everything happens at once. Somewhere between the hospital and the first night at home, tiny things pile up on a shelf: a paper bracelet, a curl of hair, a photo taken at 4am. They feel too small to matter — and then, years later, they are the only proof of how little your baby once was.
Here is what parents most often wish they had kept, and how to keep it without turning it into a project.
1. The hospital bracelet
It is the first thing your baby ever wore, and it has their name on it. Most hospitals let you take it home. Put it somewhere safe the same day you arrive — a drawer is where these things disappear. A personalized keepsake box gives it a permanent spot.
2. The very first photo
Not the pretty newborn shoot a week later. The first one, blurry and badly lit, taken minutes after birth. Print it. Phones get lost, cloud accounts get closed, and a printed photo survives both.
3. A first lock of hair
Usually cut months later, at the first haircut. It is the keepsake parents are most surprised to be glad about, because hair colour so often changes completely.
4. The birth details, written down properly
Time of birth, weight, length. You are certain you will never forget them. Most parents mix up the exact time within two years. Write them once, on paper, in the first week.
5. Somewhere to keep the rest
A first outfit, the going-home blanket, a card from the midwife. These need a home, not a pile. Some families use a baby memory book for the written milestones and a box for the physical things — the two work well side by side.
A free printable to start with
The milestones are the easiest thing to lose track of. We made a simple checklist for the first year — twelve moments to tick off, with room to write the date next to each one.

Make it something they keep
