Personalized Baby Gifts for Grandparents to Give

There is a quiet difference between the gift from a friend and the gift from a grandparent. The friend buys something helpful. The grandparent is buying the thing the family still has when the baby is grown.

That is a lot to put on one present, and it is why so many new grandparents end up buying a stroller instead. Here is what to give when you want it to last.

Give the object, not the equipment

Equipment gets outgrown, replaced and resold. Objects get kept. A personalized baby blanket with the child's name on it is not competing with the pram, it is doing a different job entirely: it is the thing that ends up in the box in the attic, and then in their own child's crib.

Parents-to-be are already drowning in equipment recommendations. Almost nobody is buying them something to keep.

Choose the name, not the theme

Nursery themes change. Names do not. If you are choosing a design, lean towards the ones where the name is the centrepiece rather than the ones built around a busy pattern or a colour scheme that has to match the room. Every blanket in the blanket collection is made the same way: the name printed in raised stitch-look lettering, with the artwork around it kept soft and quiet.

The gentler, more classic designs age particularly well. They do not look of their year, which matters when the blanket is meant to outlive the nursery.

Be the one who starts the record

Parents of a newborn do not have the hours to fill in a book. Grandparents often do. A baby memory book given with the first two pages already written in your own hand, what the day was like, who was in the waiting room, what you thought when you first saw them, becomes a family document rather than a blank notebook.

The same applies to a keepsake box. Put something of yours in it before you give it.

If there is more than one grandchild

Fairness matters here more than it does with any other giver. Children notice, eventually, who got what. The simplest solution is to give the same thing every time, in a different design: the same blanket, the same box, each with their own name. It becomes a tradition rather than a comparison.

On buying before the birth

Personalized pieces are made to order, so they cannot be bought in advance unless the name is settled, and many parents keep the name private until the birth. There are two good ways around this. Order the moment you are told, and accept that it arrives a couple of weeks in. Or give a gift set at the shower and add the personalized piece afterwards, which most families prefer anyway, because the blanket then arrives in the quiet week when the visitors have stopped coming.

Where to start

Browse the newest designs, or go straight to the blanket collection. If the baby is due around the holidays, the Baby's First Christmas designs are worth a look while they are in season. And if you are unsure whether to use the full name or just the first, our guide to names and wording is a short read and will save you second-guessing it.
