First Birthday Gift Ideas That Outlast the Party
A first birthday is really a party for the parents. The baby will not remember the cake, the balloons or the twelve people singing at them. The parents will remember all of it, and they will keep whatever still means something a year later.
That is the useful test for a first birthday gift: will this survive the spring clear-out? Most toys will not. These do.
1. A blanket with their name on it
At one, a child is starting to have opinions about things. A blanket becomes theirs in a way nothing else does: it goes in the car, to grandma's house, into the tent made of dining chairs. A personalized blanket given at one gets several years of hard use, and then it gets kept.
At 30 x 40 inches it is big enough for a toddler to drag around and wrap up in, and small enough that it does not trail on the floor behind them. That is the size that actually gets carried.
2. A keepsake box for the first year
By the first birthday, the parents have a drawer somewhere with a hospital bracelet, a lock of hair and a wristband from the first flight. A personalized keepsake box turns that drawer into something they can hand over in twenty years. It is also the rare gift that costs the parents no effort, which at this stage of their lives is worth a great deal.
3. A memory book, ideally given with a pen
A baby memory book is the gift new parents mean to buy and never quite do. Give it filled in as far as you can: your own handwriting on the first page, the date you met them, what they were like. That single page is what makes it get used rather than shelved.
4. Something for the next stage, not this one
One-year-olds receive an enormous amount of baby equipment and very little toddler equipment. A personalized lunch box looks like a strange present for a baby and becomes the most used object in the house eighteen months later, when nursery starts and every other child has the same one.
5. A set, if you are the grandparents
If this is the gift from the grandparents and it is expected to be the significant one, a matching gift set carries more weight than three separate items in three separate bags. It photographs better too, which matters more than anyone admits at a first birthday.
What to skip
Clothing in the current size. It will not fit by the time it is worn. If you buy clothes, buy for next summer.
Anything that makes a noise and cannot be switched off. The parents will remember that one too.
Getting the timing right
Everything personalized is made to order, so it is worth ordering a couple of weeks before the party rather than a couple of days. If the birthday falls near the holidays, order earlier still, when the Christmas designs are also going out.
Not sure what to have printed on it? Our guide to names and wording covers the decision in a couple of minutes.
